Other TECHNIQUES
'MACRO'
The art of macro photography seems very tricky when in reality it is very simple. i'm going to take you through the different techniques
they will help you create incredible macro images.
K I T Y O U'L L N E E D
C A M E R A
(Digital or film will work- manual focus will be better then automatic)
M A C R O L E N S
( these can be bought for as little as £5 from ebay-with the cheep ones,
they screw onto your standered lens)
T R I P O D
M A G N I F I N G G L A S S
(if you haven't got a macro lens put holding this to the front of you camera's lens will work)
L I G H T
(A photography lamp or standard will do, even a well lit room would work)
T R A Y
(Macro can get messy, and its also good to have a stage to contain the objects your shooting)
M I R R O R
(Background images as well as one to put objects on top of. its a great way to
add sparkle to your images and make the most of little light.)
F O I L
(If you don't have a large mirror can be used as a reflector as well
as adding sparkle to the images -use with glitter)
W A T E R D R O P P E R
(adds reflections and impact to the image- it draws the eye to the layers your shooting.)
W H I T E C A R D / F A B R I C
(for bouncing light)
O B J E C T'S:
(Card making things works well)
*Flowers
*Feathers
*Eyes
*Jewellery
*Glitter
*Insects
*Animals
*Shinney strips
*People
*Eggs
*Paper craft
*Pencils
*Textured paper
W H E R E T O S T A R T
Set up your macro scene, by layering your chosen objects, its best to keep to 3 items and not over crowd your shot.
Make sure to be able to walk around the scene to shoot from different angles,
T H I N G S T H A T W O R K W E L L
*Feathers with Glitter
*Flowers with Water Droplets
*Peoples eyes work well with dynamic make up
*Insects with warm light on coloured petals
(go into your garden lady birds/ caterpillars spiders are all there if you look for them)
* U S I N G A M O D E L
When using a model remember to be clear about what you want of them, someone's face may or may not work well with certain make up looks, shoot test shots with different styles, and then choose what works best.
Dynamic make-up works best with close up macro, so choose a theme a build a look from there.
* W A T E R D R O P L E T S
Using water allows for many reflections with the other objects in the scene, it draws the eye, also gives depth and impact.
**TRICK 1:
a good trick with water droplets to add more colour to the scene is add food colouring, ink, or washing up liquid. it depends on the colour you want to shoot
with what you choose;
*Rainbow- add washing up liquid
*Red/ PURPLE/ BLUE - add ink/ food (more will make the colour richer)
*White- add milk
**TRICK 2:
Once you've drop water on your chosen object, carefully put it into the freezer. this will make the droplets hard (they won't reflect as well) It allows you to shoot and not have to keep putting new droplets on your objects. it also creates a stiffness to the image, that will help with a fairy tale or Gothic style.
* WITH S P I D E R W E B
You can either be very lucky and fine a real spiders web and drop a little water and glitter and things into it, or you can weave some
clear thread into a net pattern and fake it when making your own its best to use a large square frame or circle frame ie an embroidery frame, in order to give yourself space. weave the thread into the style of a dream catcher to create a spider web effect.
keep the thread thin to make it look more real.
* M O V E M E N T
creating movement on such a small scale can be very tricky, one way of doing it is; place your tray with objects onto of a amp or speaker, then using a low setting place bass music through it. This vibrates the the tray and moves the water.
* A N I M A L S/ I N S E C T S
Macro photography allows us to see minute detail, it allows us to see worlds in worlds, things that normally would go unseen. Using insects or small animals creates an other worldly feeling to photographs, like fairy tales or science fiction. Using colours which coronate to the insects/ animals in the background will give your work balance but also make them more visually interesting.
*P A P E R C R A F T
Paper craft can create some very humours macro shots, when done well it can create an iconic image. Just folding two pages inward will create a heart shape this image has become a favourite of DEVIANT ART
JOINERS
Joiners are images created by piecing lots of 'joining' photographs together. David Hockney a British artist used this technique in a lot of his work. It creates a very large Bold image.
DRAWN IN
This is using illustration and photography to create a unique and sometimes very funny image.
SPLIT SCREEN
This technique is to put together several images that together make a story or explore a theme.
DADA/SURREAL (HOBBY HORSE)
This techniques started in the early ears of photography as an art form. artist would play around the image, changing the image with paint and objects. Darkroom techniques can help with this style.
Light Movement
Using light as the focus of your image. With a digital camera setting the option to 'night vision' will make this technique work when you can't change the exposure length. Simply move the light around in front of the camera while taking the shot. The lights path will be photograph creating shapes.
TOUCH OF COLOUR
This is a technique which works best with mostly black and white. to try this technique you will need some form of photo editing suit. Copy your image, paste then turn your colour image into black and white, the underneath layer should be edited to make the colours brighter and bolder, then erase parts of the black and white images to reveal the colour underneath.
LONG EXPOSURE
This is when you set your camera to a longer exposure and leave it, using a digital camera and a tripod will make this process a lot easier. It can be copied by using a photo editing suit, and blurring the photograph to an extreme movement while keeping one item in the photograph un-blurred.
R E S E A R C H
* look at how other photographers/ artist approached this theme, either on DEVIANT ART or in
magazines/ books. You may find a style, technique you like and want to try out.
* Travel/ tourism centres can be very helpful when scouting a location. Ask the people who run local hotels/b &b's as they will know alot about the area's which tourists will like.
* WATCH The film/ character you've picked a lot to get how they move, the expressions they have, this will make a better photograph. Don't just make it up!!!!
T I P S
* Creating a spider diagram is a great way to work out themes for projects like this put the theme in the middle and then around the theme place would that you think of connect to the theme ie first love- youth- mr right- best friend- memories etc also this will help the idea's over the kind of image you will create form.
* Creating a mood board is a really great way of starting a project like this, placing inspiration as well as colours textures and sketchers will allow you to see how your ideas work together before staging.
* COLLECT THINGS!
collecting odd trinkets and weird things will help you no end in photography. pieces of dolls, teddy bears playing cards old suitcases, which may look like junk come in very handy. So go looking in charity shops, second-hand shops, jumble sales (garage sales) or just in your attic.
P L A N N I N G
* Using your chosen props/location elements (the trees/ mountains /waterfalls/Castle/ pirate ship) work out how you want to image to look first by sketching it out, this will let you figure out the balance before shooting valuable film or memory space.
* Write out a schedule for the shooting day- you may be sitting around for a few days to get the one shot so draw a schedule using your research of the place, to decided when to have lunch, when to call it a day etc.
* CHECK CHECK CHECK the weather reports, the day your shooting it may have just rained which will make things look very different to the days its dry. check what your location looks like on different days, fog and mist can be very good elements to photograph it not just about bright and shiny skylines.
A R T I C A L S
* Look at photography articles on techniques, it may not be the same theme, but may be appropriate for what you want to accomplish. looking into photography magazine, or how to books can offer some very good tips and tricks for your own work.
E D I T I N G
* Having a form of editing suit is very important, even when doing dark room photography. Its all
about getting the best out of your image, so look around for a program that suits you and
your needs. This doesn't always mean the most expensive, I've used photoshop 7.0 for years and find
it fits all my needs.
* Editing also allow you to work with 'ACTIONS' & 'BRUSHES' both very valuable tools with photography, they allow you to change the feel of your images very quickly to let you see how your image can look in different tones and hues.
TRAVELLING
* It is very important to get out and about when becoming a photographer- so go out and visit lots of local and non locals spots to photograph, as photographers you have to be seer's this means you have to view the world as if it is an image, knowing what makes a moment so perfect that it needs to be captured. This can only happen if you travel, either by bus to a local park or by plane to a different world. Go out have fun and remember to be safe!
tip 1
Create your own camera bag!
using the same materials just create one that looks a little less like its carrying a lot of expensive kit (which thieves look out for ) and more that your only carrying your lunch perhaps.
tip 2
Take a friend- safety in numbers, and if your travelling far it may be a brilliant day out and memory for both of you.
tip 3
Take id- and call your family. This will put them at ease that your ok!
